Where Steelworkers Stand

Steelworkers is a democratic and politically engaged union. At all levels of our union, our members make decisions on USW policies, direction and programs.

Steelworkers are committed to fighting in our workplaces and in our communities for progressive change on issues that affect working families.

In Canada, our policy decisions are made every three years by members attending the USW Canadian National Policy Conference. Similarly, international policy and direction is set by members.

As well, members of each USW district hold regular conferences in their jurisdictions. USW members have many other opportunities to contribute to union activity such as human rights, health and safety, Women of Steel and issues specific to various sectors and industries.

Steelworkers stand for equality and human rights. We fight discrimination and harassment based on racial or ethnic origin, gender, ability or sexual orientation. Steelworkers are women and men of every ethnic background, working in every sector of Canada's economy. We are proud of great diversity.

Steelworkers are leaders in political action, relentlessly pushing the progressive agenda on issues important to our members and all working families. We are at the forefront of campaigns to defend our health-care system, improve public pensions, protect our environment, improve worker health and safety, create sustainable jobs and ensure our laws put ordinary Canadians before narrow corporate interests.
